Core holes

Instead of trails near the bark, this specimen had internal core holes, and instead of being white, was a dark black color, distinguishing itself rather well.

Possible hypotheses include internal core filters, or to help the tree breathe and maintain flexibility abd opportunities to swell during extreme cold.

Also found my 6th golden birch and my first birch ever seen to have old mans beard growing on it.

The buds are starting to make themselves known on the White Poplar and the birds have been jovial enough, starting their morning hymns with greater voracity than Ive heard in the previous 5 months.

March — good winter for gathering wood since we had a warm spell in late feb. That turned the pwder ibto snow pack and manouvering is easy enough, ajd may do some thinning to give the next generation a little kick.
